Concentration #8: "Disgusted"

I feel like this one may be my most "advanced" work yet, conceptually and technically. I thought of how I could use an intermediary subject to help bring forth an emotion. Since my emotion this week was "disgusted", I settled on drawing a fly close-up with all its weird, gross appendages. I changed my usual medium this time by using watercolor crayons/watercolor for the first time. The fly's eyes are the design structure (repetition/gradation), and the portrait is reflected in one of the fly's eyes (AND MY SUBJECT WAS MARY NOVAK! haha), so you really get the feeling of someone being disgusted because they are looking at a gross fly. After the critique, I added color to the eyes to help it blend into the piece better, brought some circles more into the other eye to integrate them, and cleaned up the background to define the rest of the fly's body, etc. I personally am really proud of this one...:)

  2. Well i must say the girl in this piece is quite beautiful haha. this piece is really unique and very engaging. I like the way you incorporated the structure in this piece as it is different from all of your past pieces. this definietly takes your concentration to another level. keep up the good work!

  3. Definitly your best work daniel. The idea is so complex and interesting, it's almost humorous. When I first saw this piece I had feelings of disgust while looking at the little hairy fly with his big eyes- but that just shows you how successful this piece is! If you are able to evoke certain feelings in the viewers of your artwork, your work is obviously a success. Plus, I love the design patterns in the fly's eyes. Wow- great work.

  4. Daniel- excellent work yet again. My only suggestion to this piece is to continue to develop greater contrast from the fly body to the background. Overall, however, it is very strong and is original!
